“Such Friends”:  100 Years Ago, February 25, 1922, before dawn, Prison Saint-Pierre, Versailles, France

In about 20 seconds, the “Bluebeard of Gambais,” Henri Desire Landru, 52, convicted of murdering 11 wealthy women [the police think there were more], walks to the platform, puts his head in the guillotine, says,

I shall be brave,”

and is beheaded, in accordance with his court-ordered sentence.

FYI:  The last public execution by guillotine in France was 55 years later in 1977.
